During the spring break of my sophomore year of college, I traveled to the small city of San Miguel de Allende, in Guanajuato, Mexico. It was truly breathtaking, in every sense of the word. Narrow cobblestone streets wove chaotically through vibrant cafes, towering cathedrals and quiet courtyards. Late at night, lampposts casted long shadows, as laughter and conversation filled the air. Couples walked silently hand in hand, traversing through arching pathways of amorous light, their footsteps echoing off of the surrounding walls. As night turned into day, sunlight gradually filtered through rustling leaves and gaping stained glass windows, intermingling with the scents of coffee and baked goods. The hallowed halls of the cathedrals slowly became visible, brightly illuminated in all of their majesty and grandeur. The local market bustled with activity. A family conversed happily, waiting behind a modest wooden cart. A short Mexican man cooked enchiladas on battered pans, as steam obscured the wall behind him. Each day in San Miguel was filled with a sense of wonderment. I spent my time there exploring the city’s numerous cathedrals, cafes, courtyards and restaurants. At many points throughout my trip, I wandered randomly throughout San Miguel, chancing upon elegant architecture and incredible food. In the following photos, my goal is to bring to life the spirit of San Miguel, through its colorful and vibrant architecture. Step foot into the awe-inducing beauty of San Miguel de Allende, a city that never sleeps.
